The Comprehensive Compendium of Fevers
Fever, or Pyrexia, is not a disease itself but a protective mechanism of the body. It is the Vital Force’s way of creating an environment that is hostile to invading pathogens. To treat a fever effectively, we must first understand its rhythm and the story it tells about the body’s internal state.
In Homeopathy, the “fever profile”—how it rises, when it peaks, and how the patient reacts—is more important than the temperature on the thermometer. By matching these specific patterns, we can restore balance without suppressing the body’s natural defense.
1. Continuous Fever
In this type, the temperature remains above normal throughout the day and does not fluctuate more than **1°C** in 24 hours.
Common Causes: Lobar Pneumonia, Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), Brucellosis.
Aconite: For sudden onset, usually after exposure to cold wind. High fever with dry skin and intense anxiety.
Bryonia: For fever that develops slowly. Patient wants to lie perfectly still and has an intense thirst for cold water.
Belladonna: Violent fever with a red face, throbbing carotids, and radiating heat that can be felt by the hand.
2. Remittent Fever
The temperature fluctuates more than **2°C** during the day but never returns to normal. This is the classic “step-ladder” pattern.
Common Causes: Typhoid (Enteric Fever), Infective Endocarditis.
Baptisia: For the septic state. The patient feels “scattered” in bed and has a dull, besotted look.
Rhus Tox: Restless fever. The patient must move constantly to relieve the aching in the bones. Tongue has a red triangular tip.
Gelsemium: For the “3 Ds”—Dull, Drowsy, Dizzy. No thirst, heavy eyelids, and deep prostration.
3. Intermittent Fever
The temperature is present for only several hours of the day, returning to perfectly normal in between episodes.
Common Causes: Malaria, Septicemia, Kala-azar.
China (Cinchona): For fevers with distinct stages: Chill, Heat, and Sweat. Followed by extreme weakness.
Eupatorium Perf: Known as “Bone-set.” For fever where the patient feels as if their bones are breaking.
Natrum Mur: Intermittent fever occurring typically between 10 AM and 11 AM. Accompanied by headache and salt cravings.
4. Hectic Fever
A type of remittent fever where the daily fluctuation is huge (frequently more than 3°C between the highest and lowest points).
Common Causes: Chronic lung infections, Tuberculosis (TB), deep-seated abscesses.
Arsenicum Album: Fever with coldness and burning heat simultaneously. Patient is anxious, restless, and exhausted.
Pyrogenium: For septic fevers where the pulse is out of proportion with the temperature.
Phosphorus: Hectic fever with evening flushes, night sweats, and a desire for ice-cold drinks.
5. Relapsing Fever
Episodes of fever followed by several days of normal temperature, after which the fever “relapses” or returns.
Common Causes: Tick-borne diseases, certain viral infections, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Ferrum Phos: For the early stages of any fever where there are no clear symptoms yet.
Psorinum: When the fever keeps returning because the body’s reaction is too weak to finish the fight.
Sulphur: When the fever lingers and the patient feels “hot” all over, especially the soles of the feet.
🚨 Critical Advice: If a fever is accompanied by a stiff neck, severe rash, difficulty breathing, or confusion, seek medical help immediately. While Homeopathy is a great support, some fevers indicate life-threatening conditions.
